Sir,

I have noted from the local Press that there is a proposal under consideration for the establishment of an office in Hong Kong for the purpose of maintaining liaison between the Hong Kong and Chinese Government.

If such is the case, I have the honour to submit myself as an applicant for a post in such an office.

I am aged 46. Both parents British. Born in China and resided in China since 1919. Speak_fluent Mandarin. During the recent war I served in Chungking as a First Secretary to the British Embassy and concurrently held a commission as Lieut -Colonel in the British Army for the purpose of maintaining liaison with the Chinese, French, American, Dutch and Russian military staffs, and successfully negotiated with the Chinese over many potential difficulties. I was awarded the 0.B.E. for my work in this connection in the last Birthday Honours' List, and the Chinese Government have recently conferred on me the Order (with Rosette) of the Cloud and Banner.

Mao Tzu-tung, Chairman of the Communist Party,

presented me with a Japanese sword on December 9th, 1946 as recognition of my cooperation with the Communists versus the Japanese.

Amongst personal friends of mine I may mention Dr. T. V. Soong, Premier, with whom I worked for three years, Dr. Wang Shih-chieh, Foreign Minister, and General Ho Ying-ch'in, formerly Minister of War, and
